But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Matthew 23:8-12 (ESV)
What is a chaplain, and what are we called to do? In some circles a chaplain is a lower form of lay clergy who focus on helping hurting souls more than growing Christ’s body. But isn’t that what every pastor or church leader is truly to focus on? Seeking to grow the body of Christ through our own worldly means is taking the reigns away from God. For it is God who saves souls, not the minister. It is the responsibility of the minister to be the undershepherd to Christ who is himself the Shepherd, teacher, and guide. The One who leads us to the only Father of the Church, the Body of Christ.
And then there is the lowly layman whom God has called to preach, to guide, to offer help in every situation regardless of the sensitivity of the matter or the religion of the individual. But we are not the Shepherd. We chaplains are not even the undershepherd. We are only the servant to the Son of God and as such servant to all.
We then should humble ourselves and make our calling available that we can be the servant to the undershepherds, the pastors and church leaders. By doing such we must always submit to those who have rule over us, as Paul has instructed and reminded us to do: Hebrews 13:17 (ESV) “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
Finally we should take joy in our calling. Colossians 3:17 (ESV) “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him”.
Take joy in our calling to preach the Gospel of Light to the world. To reach out to those who are in need both physical and spiritual.
We are the brotherhood of Christian Chaplains and riders who love and exalt Christ, and to the
highways and byways we shall ride.
