A Chaplain Is…

You are what you do

What is a chaplain?  That’s a question I get asked often, and since there are so many kinds of chaplains my answer isn’t always definitive.

Here at Biker Bible Institute, we provide free chaplain training for many areas of chaplaincy. BBI trained chaplains work as hospital chaplains, law enforcement chaplains,  and fire department chaplains

We have chaplains that work with “special” children, and some who work in nursing homes. Some are church chaplains, but most of us work as biker chaplains.

BBI trained chaplains are such a diverse group that it is sometimes difficult to give a concise answer to “What Is A Chaplain?” But let’s try anyway.

Forrest Gump

“A chaplain is as a chaplain does.” Sound a little silly? I do admit it reminds me a little bit of Forrest Gump’s “Mama says…”

Whenever I’m asked what my ministry is, I say, “I’m a chaplain. I do whatever is needed at the moment. It might be cutting grass for someone. It might be just listening to someone who needs a friend, or cleaning the church, teaching a class, even preaching a sermon.

To me, that’s what a chaplain is…someone who does whatever is needed at the moment. After all, “a chaplain is as a chaplain does”.

But don’t take just my word for it…

See It For Yourself

Please watch the short video below. It will explain a lot. You might be surprised at what chaplains are. After you watch the video we’ll talk more.

So did you learn something new about being a chaplain?

Hopefully, you now have a better picture of what a chaplain is. Can you picture yourself being a chaplain? Great!

If you enjoyed the video then you might also enjoy this article. This story was written by one of our chaplains, Matt Caskey. Matt is also one of our Regional Directors.

Good Samaritans

Do you remember the story Jesus told about the good samaritan? You can read it in Luke 10:25-37, but here is a short version:

A man was beaten and robbed. Two men passed by the beaten man and ignored his situation. A third man saw the beaten man and stopped to help. He gave that poor beaten man everything that was needed, and more.

Jesus called that third man a “good samaritan” because he showed mercy to the man who was robbed. Jesus ended His parable with this command, “Go and do likewise’.

Do you have a “go and do likewise” heart?  Are you someone with the heart to show mercy?  Does your personality lean toward kindness?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of those questions then you have a chaplains heart. Maybe it’s time to take action and do something about it.

Remember, our chaplain training is always free of charge.
