My Philosophy Of Ministry

By David Hoyt

My philosophy of ministry has certainly evolved over the years. As a young child learning about the bible and God, I thought you had to be a priest, minister or rabbi with a degree in divinity or theology to minister or teach people about God. As I got older and read more of the word of God I realized this was not necessarily the case at all. It may sound cliché, but I truly believe God qualifies the called. I use the gospel stories of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as well as the book of Acts as my example.

When Jesus started his public ministry and called His disciples to do the same; these were ordinary men doing ordinary tasks in their communities. They lived among the people whom they ministered to on a daily basis. The disciples were visible and accessible to all and lived out their faith by doing the things they knew how to do. What they did not know or understand they trusted by faith in Jesus to teach them. This for them was a daily learning experience as they were sent out to minister not knowing everything, but trusting God and eventually after the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit.

I believe the people of God, the church, need to be out in the environment that God has called them and not just sitting in a pew selfishly receiving. Giving of time, talent and knowledge (when asked) where they are in each one’s own environment would do more to demonstrate the Father’s love for His children than anything.

I believe to be of service to others with a humble heart and a peaceful spirit and meeting their basic needs first is the only way to gain trust and confidence of those you are trying to reach because they will know you care. Trust and respect are huge in the biker community and I believe if you ride where they ride, eat where they eat and demonstrate you truly care about their welfare by being present and real you will be able to effectively minister.
