Deb Childrey

Chaplain Of The Month

My name is Deb Childrey, some people call me Shorty. One of my old Fire Chiefs gave me that nickname.  I am 48 years old, and on 2 volunteer fire departments, I work as a pit road firefighter for NASCAR at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia. I have been in the fire, ems service for over 20 years.

At the age of 6 months, I was adopted by a very loving Christian family who welcomed me into their home. There I grew up going to church and being very active in the church. I went to the same church for 40 years and when my mom retired as church secretary we all decided to move to another church. I felt kind of lost, tried to find a new church home. During this process, I bought my first motorcycle.  I was still trying at life to see where I fit in. I visited different churches and different biker groups.  I checked out a few secular bike groups and God showed me that was where I didn’t need to be.  So, I prayed and googled Christian Motorcycle groups. The first one that came up was a local Christian Biker group.  I went to their bible study and come to find out I knew the Director, we had been in the fire/ems service, that I had known for 20 years.  So, I prayed about it and after visiting a few times felt impressed and that this I where God wanted me to be.

During my time trying to find a new church home, a biker group, and finding a God-given purpose. I was battling PTSD, depression, and other demons. If God hadn’t shown me this motorcycle ministry group, I probably wouldn’t be here today.

I have grown in my walk with Christ. Found a great group of Christian riders and also a new church home called Trailhead Church located in Graham, NC.  In September of 2018, I rededicated my life and was baptized as an adult.

Being Ordained is not about serving God perfectly, but about serving God visibly, allowing others to learn what they can from watching your success’s and failures. People see this and are like this person is REAL and not trying to put on a show just to win people over.  When people see me honestly, they can relate to me better as a Chaplain.

Throughout my walk with Christ, I have had several opportunities to minister to others.  Whether I was on a fire/ems scene, riding the motorcycle, working for NASCAR there is always a chance to share Christ.

As Chaplain, I want to be available 24/7 for anybody that needs me.

In closing, I have been blessed to be a part of several different groups. And it has allowed me the flexibility to minister in more than one area.

Respectfully serving in Christ
